How to be a personal trainer for the elderly

Personal training is currently a fast-growing as well as a rewarding career a person can indulge in mainly due to the growing aging population. Senior citizens are individuals who require special care due to the nature of their bodies, and thus personal trainers come in handy. It is estimated that in ten years from now, the employment levels of fitness instructors will have grown by more than ten percent as compared to other job outlooks. When you become certified, you can decide to work with any age group such as senior citizens depending on your preference. Population analysts argue that as the current population continues to age and Baby Boomers reach sixty years and above, the demand for personal trainers who have the adequate knowledge to deal with the particular age demographic will be high. Once you become a certified personal trainer and can comfortably work with senior citizens, you will be in a position of developing a training program, assisting your clients to improve their mobility and help senior citizens improve their quality of life. For you to be a successful personal trainer, you have to follow the following steps.

Firstly, you need to become certified as a personal trainer. You can choose from any recognized professional Organizations where you will get your certification. This will play a large role in proving you know what you are doing especially when it comes to dealing with the elderly population.

Secondly, you will need to choose your specialty which will help in shaping your career. You can opt to work with younger people or opt to work with senior citizens. By doing this, you will have set yourself from other trainers existing in your location. Moreover, you will be able to increase your client base as you know what you’re focusing on.

Next, you will be needed to undertake a specialty course. If you opt to specialize with the senior population, you can take the Senior Fitness certification. This specialty course will require some minimal months of preparations to make sure you are adequate to handle the senior population. The course teaches some few fitness basics that are needed when dealing with elderly individuals such as how to do flexibility exercises. It also instructs on what senior citizens should avoid due to their delicate nature.

Fourthly, you will need to take courses dealing with strength and flexibility training. Senior citizens need these two exercises as they help in making their bodies fight illness, maintain balance, increase bone density and live an active life. Older citizens are always interested in these training exercises due to their low-impact nature and the benefits incurred later.

The next step entails searching for clients. In this stage, you can opt to work in a gym, at home, begin your own fitness business or go to your client’s home. The place you decide to find your clients all depends on your preference and your flexibility. You can opt to advertise yourself in place you are sure seniors are more likely to be such as community centers.

Lastly, you will be required to begin your first session which entails understanding your client’s physical condition. In this stage, you will go through the client’s medical conditions while determining if they will affect the exercises at any instance and if not, the next step is creating a program that suits the client’s needs.
