How Old is Too Old to Start Gymnastics?

Gymnastics is known as a “young sport”; however, in my humble opinion, you’re NEVER too old to start gymnastics! Too often, a 12 or 13-year old decides they want to try gymnastics. The parents have been fed the, “gymnastics is a young sport” line, and they figure it’s too late for their child to begin. The reality is, a 12 or 13-year old who’s never done gymnastics before can jump right in as well as a younger child, just like they could in baseball or soccer. They’ll have a steep learning curve, but they can still achieve their goals.

Gymnastics isn’t a sport that caters only to the young or only to the super fit and super flexible. Yes, youth, fitness, and flexibility make the sport a lot easier, but gymnastics can provide benefits to kids of all ages and abilities. In fact, many gyms provide classes that are designed specifically for kids who start when they’re a little older. These classes often focus more on strength and flexibility in the beginning to ensure that older children progress safely through the required skills. Once a good foundation is built, it’s easier to add more and more challenging and exciting skills.

Some gymnastics centers even offer adult gymnastics! Why in the world would an adult want to take gymnastics? Because the physical benefits of gymnastics training are like no other training available! Besides, getting in shape while flipping around like a child seems like a win-win to me!

Just a few of the benefits that gymnastics training can provide to older children, and yes, event to adults, includes;

  • Increased flexibility
  • Increased core strength
  • Increased body awareness
  • Increased agility
  • Increased balance and coordination
  • Increased self-confidence

There are so many physical and mental benefits that gymnastics has to offer, it would be a waste to not make all of those benefits available to older children and adults. So, if your 15-year old asks if she can start taking gymnastics lessons, instead of telling her she’s too old, research the gymnastics programs in your area and find one she’ll fit into. Then, let her reap all of the awesome benefits of this amazing sport!
