Soccer Play to Your Strengths
Play to Your Strengths
¨A strength is the ability to consistently provide near-perfect performance in a specific activity. Talents are naturally recurring patterns of thought, feeling, or behavior that can be productively applied.¨ The Gallup Organization
Though there is a lot of research advising to either play to your strengths or strengthen your weaknesses, in soccer, it is better to play to your strengths.
First of all, your team is comprised, hopefully, of many different strengths. Therefore, you are on the team because of your strengths, not your weaknesses. Though it is beneficial to be aware of your weaknesses, you don’t necessarily need to spend time strengthening them. You can see this in the World Cup. For example, Belgium doesn’t have the best ball handling skills so they play defense and wait for a breakthrough moment. In turn, Brazil has excellent ball handling skills and less than perfect defense. Rather than each team perfecting their weaknesses in a game at the world level, each team emphasizes their strengths.
This can also take appear at the individual level. For example, if you are fast but not so good with the ball, you can run fast to get the ball and pass it. Or, you can run fast to play defense. Rather than try to perfect weaknesses, emphasize your strengths.
Though it can be argued, that if Brazil had a strong defense they may have won. It is not worth time dwelling on weaknesses. There will always be errors and weak spots in the game, but if you perfect your strategy to emphasize your strengths, you will be well on your way to the podium.
