Everything You Wanted To Know About Strongman Zydrunas Savickas

Strongman Zydrunas Savickas has enjoyed his success as a strongman. His early years showed promise and he began doing sports at the age of 13. He would go on to achieve success as a strongman for many years to come. It took years of diligent hard work and effort to become the man that is a household name in the world of strongmen. Today, mention the name Zydrunas Savickas and you're sure to hear about his track record in the strongman events. Zydrunas Savickas is notably the only modern strongman competitor to win every major strongman competition.

Zydrunas Savickas in the Early Years

Lithuanian strongman Zydrunas Savickas was born July 15, 1975, in Birzai, Lithuania. Currently in his mid-40s, at the young age of 14, Zydrunas (nicknamed the Big Z), became interested in strongman sports. He was watching a Lithuanian strongman contest on television and within 3 years, he himself would take part in the strongman contest.

Clearly, Zydrunas Savickas found his niche as he's excelled in the sport of strongman events ever since. He began to power lift at age 16 and quickly became the first athlete in Lithuanian history powerlifting total over 1000 kg across the bench press, squat, and the deadlift. He would go on to prove himself time and again in a variety of competitions.

By the tender age of 17 years old, he began training professionally in powerlifting. By his second powerlifting contest, he would break all of the records and begin setting his own records both personal and professional. By 1998, the Big Z would win enter contests and although he would fail to qualify for the finals, we won the World powerlifting championship in Japan lifting a total of 1020 kg coming in just behind Brad Gillingham.

Setting Precedence

This would set a precedent for future athletes to compete against and thus far, Big Z holds many of the world-class titles in the sport. Zydrunas has worked hard to reach this level and strove to give only his best at all times to the sport.

Always big in size, he would go on to win every powerlifting contest that he entered winning the World's Strongest Man competition for a total of 4 different times in 2009, 2010, 2012, and in 2014. Big Z claimed victory another 8 times in the Arnold Strongman Classic in 2003 through 2008. In addition to 2014 and 2016.

He went on to win back-to-back titles in 2005 and in 2006 at the IFSA Strongman Championship. He would also win the world record for log lift which is a classic strongman move that is similar to snatch except that it's done with a very large steel bar.

Although Zydrunas has been a long-time successful strongman, he wasn't always the most physical minded competitor. In the 2000s when he was busy racking up the titles for strongman, he was one of the more portly strongmen to be found. In all fairness, his larger size didn't really prevent him from competitions at higher levels, he was able to deadlift a car en route to his very first World Strongman Match in 2009.

Seen in side by side shots with "the Terminator" Big Z literally dwarfs Arnold. That's right, dwarfs! His sheer size is enough to make anyone give things a second thought at what his livelihood is. At 6'3", he is literally dwarfing other strongmen and his girth goes on to confirm that he knows what he's built for.

On July 24, 2010, Zydrunas married his longtime girlfriend, Jurgita Savickiene. There's not a lot of information available on Jurgita but obviously, she caught the eye of Big Z and they're living a fairytale dream life together. The pictures of the wedding are gorgeous and with him carrying her away it looks like they are enjoying their lives together.

How much does Zydrunas Savickas Weigh?

Per the World's Strongest Man, Zydrunas did most of his competing at 375lbs or 170kg. He maintained this weight for the contests since 2009. While he didn't compete at the not-yet-televised WSM contest in Botswana, Africa, his fans knew that something was up, and they were right. The Lithuanian strongman was definitely busy working out and losing weight.

When a person is working as a strongman, it's not often seen that they might go on a diet to lose weight, however, that's just what Zydrunas did and with stellar results. Fans were intrigued and wondered how he managed to lose the weight and tone his muscles. He went from 376lbs or 170kg to 342lbs or 155kg. Fans were intrigued and they were even more interested when they found out that the defunct International Federation of Strength Athletes was cataloging his weight at 400lbs or 181kg. However, prior to going offline in 2007, the results were released, and fans began to go through some jaw-dropping motions at the new and improved strongman.

The weight loss transformation was incredibly fast and according to the pictures on his Instagram, he's still very impressive in size. He still literally dwarfs Arnold Schwarzenegger when they're captured on camera standing side by side at the Arnold Classic Asia last August. When seen alone, Arnold Schwarzenegger himself looks intimidating and large, however, Zydrunas, standing next to Arnold Schwarzenegger, looks enormous. Imagine what Arnold must have felt to have someone who is even bigger than him as the terminator standing next to him!

With so much success, many are wondering why on earth Zydrunas Savickas would even want to lose weight. Did he believe that his size was holding him back from future titles? Was he concerned when competing and having a four-way tie with none other than Jon Pall Sigmarsson, Brian Shaw, and Magnus Ver Magnusson? Perhaps we'll never know, but one thing that we do know for sure is that he was quite successful in his weight loss endeavors. He dove in headfirst and came out shining as always. His weight loss was successful, and he lost a bit of his girth during the process.

It's also possible that Zydrunas didn't change his size for professional reasons, but rather, for personal reasons. It's easy to scrutinize the pro athletes of this world, however, many are just like us, they have a normal healthy family life outside of the spotlight. After all, good health can increase the longevity of anyone. Maybe he lost weight to improve his health and his own personal health.

It's not entirely unheard of for someone to feel better about themselves when they lose weight either. So, let's not discount that potential possibility. To state that he needed to lose weight would be inappropriate, but we need to factor in that there are many great pros and cons to his weight including health benefits. When a person loses weight, the heart doesn't have to work quite so hard and the joints don't suffer quite the same impact as a person who weighs more.

Losing weight may also bring him more income opportunities as he can now compete in more competitions which have specific weight requirements. Zydrunas has also begun to sell some of the supplements that he's been using for one of the sponsors and everyone knows that sponsorship is an ideal means of income for athletes. It can literally show a physical transformation as one of the best reasons to consider the supplements. This marketing strategy has proven successful in many endeavors and can only add to his income possibilities as a spokesperson, sponsor, clothing line, magazine, and online advertising, and more.

Perhaps Zydrunas Savickas was invited to lose the weight as a marketing strategy by the company itself. While no one knows for sure, it's quite the amazing transformation and sure to raise a few eyebrows as to what Zydrunas Savickas might be up to in the future.

It's highly unlikely that there will be any repercussions due to his weight loss and from a professional standpoint, it appears that he is going to be gaining a lot more income potential from his choices of supplements. All in all, it appears to be a win-win situation for everyone involved. Especially for Zydrunas who is enjoying more health benefits and more work due to his weight loss.

Obviously, it was a wise choice as he just celebrated Top-3 finishes more than that of any other strongman and given these statistics, it's quite likely that his size was indeed holding him back from success. Prior to his weight loss regimen, Zydrunas, weighing in at 400lbs, Zydrunas defeated leaner strongman, rival Mariusz Pudzianowski and earned his first of his four claims to be The World's, Strongest Man. He also earned three more second-place finishes as the World's Strongest Man.

Clearly, his previous weight didn't hold him back and he wasn't lacking in his ability. Of course, he looks better than ever with his new and improved weight loss and he just seems to keep getting better than ever. Fans are flocking to events just to catch a glimpse of the strongman and he's not letting them down. He's winning match after match and has the physique and stature to ensure continued success in his endeavors.

Perhaps the extra weight was truly helpful in his past competitions, however, with his weight loss, he's doing better than ever and his continued success is proof of his good intentions. We may never know the true reasons for his weight loss, but clearly, it was a wise choice on his part and will continue to gain him more competitions and wins.

What Injuries do Zydrunas Savickas Have?

In the Faroe Islands during a 2001 competition, Zydrunas suffered a major setback. During Conan's Wheel event, he suffered an injury tearing both patellar tendons. Fans believed that this was perhaps the end of Zydrunas's career. However, within nine short months, Zydrunas didn't fail his fans, he went on to win the Lithuanian powerlifting championship and soon he had come in 2nd place five more times during 2003, 2004, 2011, 2013, and 2015.

Zydrunas went on to win First Place in 2009 and 2010. He was back, and he was better than ever before. Clearly, his injuries didn't hold him back, they just set him up for future wins and didn't slow him down in the least. His IFSA European win would qualify him for the world championships, and the rest, as they say, is history. By September of 2005, he would break three world records and go on to win the IFSA Strongman World Championship in Quebec. He would also win Team Europe for another time in 2006.

October 2005, Zydrunas would represent Lithuania in a team competition that included Viddas Blekaitis and Saulius Brusokas as well as Vilnius Petrauskas. The team would place 5th overall in the competition at IFSA World's Strongest Nationa Contest that took place in Ukraine.

Zydrunas would go on to win 5 out of the 7 total contests at the inaugural Strongman Championships in 2008. He also won the title of more than 58 points over second-place finisher, Ervin Katona. As this injury healed, Zydrunas continued to improve physically and worked harder than ever before.

Unfortunately, he would have another injury in 2016. His injuries left him unable to compete in 2016 due to the pain from the pressed nerve in his neck. Unfortunately, he didn't recognize the injury until later after he won the Arnold Strongman Classic. As the pain increased, he would lose as much as 80 percent of his strength for his left side as the muscles in the injury atrophied. This left his muscles unable to receive the signals to move and he states that it's one of the worst injuries that he has ever sustained.

It took some time to heal and recover from such an injury and we can only imagine the pain that he endured as he continued to recover. However, as always, Zydrunas didn't let us down and he recovered well and healed and has made his comeback better than ever before.

What is Zydrunas Savickas Diet Plan?

While it's uncertain the exact details of Zydrunas Savickas diet plan, it's quite likely that he follows a similar diet plan of Thor Bjornsson who eats approximately 13 pounds of protein on a daily basis. Thor Bjornsson and Zydrunas Savickas have been known to work out together so it's entirely possible that they have also taken the time to sit down and dine together as well.

A lot of people wonder about such a diet. Here are a few items that are included in such high protein diets and it's important to note that it's not a good idea to suddenly begin such a diet without discussing the pros and cons with a doctor or dietitian.

Such a typical diet might include Glutamine and a handful of almonds as a start to the day. After this, lots of eggs, oats and blueberries or strawberries (or even both), as well as avocado, might be in order. Within a few hours of that start, 400 grams of beef along with the same amount of sweet potatoes and some spinach and greens might be in order. Just a few short hours later glutamine should be added into the diet routine.

Lunch would consist of equal amounts of chicken and potatoes along with some greens and fruit. IT doesn't stop there. A mere 2 hours later, 150 grams of oats or sweet potatoes along with 2 bananas and some rice cereal and frozen berries and another handful of almonds would be all added to the blender for a protein drink. Peanut butter and more glutamine would be included in this drink.

As per the protocol, more glutamine and Vitargo would be added in about half an hour later. For dinner, there would be 60 more grams of protein and 2 more bananas. This would be followed by 500 grams of beef and potatoes along with more greens. Finally, several hours later, 500 grams of salmon and the same amount of sweet potatoes would be consumed.

The day would end with 50 grams of casein protein or half a dozen eggs and some avocado along with more almonds and 50 grams of peanut butter.

The person would also need to drink plenty of water throughout the day and plenty of juice to include more calories. Just looking at all that food in that list can make one feel stuffed. To further add to the diet, another 50 grams of casaine protein or more raw eggs should be consumed.

Eating is a huge part of training but it's important to remember that these amounts are tailored to the person so that they will be obtaining the maximum benefit from the diet without overdoing it. For the average everyday person, these amounts are huge and it's vital to remember that this diet shouldn't be embarked upon without first discussing the reasons with a doctor or dietician.

In fact, it could actually be detrimental to one's health to consumer such amounts of food without doing the proper workout to help work some of it into the muscles and work it off.
